YOUR PLAN

Upper first, then Lower Falls.

Three hours is enough to see both without turning the park into a race.

    UPPER OR LOWER FIRST?

Use the stop you’d regret missing as the anchor.

    UPPER FALLS

    Best default first stop.

Fastest path to the signature waterfall. Good for short visits, accessibility, and pairing with the brewery.

    LOWER FALLS

Best when you want to explore.

Multiple cascades, island access and more room to move make it the better place to spend a longer block of time.

    PRACTICAL GUIDE

The answers people actually need before the drive.

    How long?

45 min: Upper Falls. 90 min: Upper Falls plus another overlook or food. 3 hr: both falls. Half day: add island or longer walk. Full day: add serious trail time or Rivermouth.

    Accessibility

Both falls have accessible viewing opportunities. Upper Falls includes a 1,100-foot accessible boardwalk. Lower Falls has accessible viewpoints and the Ronald A. Olson Island Bridge. A track chair may be available; confirm with the park.

    River Trail

The point-to-point River Trail is about 5.1 miles. Roots, hills and stairs make it a real hike. Verify seasonal shuttle operation before relying on a one-way plan.

    With kids

Use Upper Falls as the signature stop, but budget more time at Lower Falls for the island, bridge, multiple cascades and room to move.

    Food

The Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub is in the Upper Falls area, making it easy to pair with the main overlook without adding another drive.

    Winter

Groomed skiing, snowshoeing and winter waterfall views make this more than a summer stop. Use the XC tool for regional snow intelligence, then verify local grooming.

    FAQ

    Quick answers.

Can I see both Upper and Lower Falls in one visit?

Yes. They are about four road miles apart, and a three-hour visit is a practical baseline for seeing both without rushing every stop.

    Which falls should I prioritize?

Upper Falls is the stronger default if time is limited. Lower Falls is better when you want to explore, move around or give kids more to do.

Do I need to hike between the falls?

No. You can drive between the Upper and Lower day-use areas. The River Trail is an optional point-to-point hike.

Is Tahquamenon worth visiting in winter?

Yes. Winter adds frozen-waterfall scenery, groomed cross-country skiing, marked snowshoeing and a quieter park experience. Verify current access and grooming before the drive.
