There is no single best weekend statewide. The Upper Peninsula peaks from late September into the first week of October, northern Lower Michigan through the middle of October, and the southern tier into late October. Pick the region that matches the weekend you have.

Each region carries its own historical peak window, and the U.P. runs roughly two to three weeks ahead of the southern Lower Peninsula. For your date the planner scores how near that region sits to full color, then it penalises distance, because a region at 96 percent four hours away is usually a worse Saturday than one at 88 percent forty minutes away. Regions that will already be bare are pushed down hard, since there is nothing to drive to.
Within the seven day forecast window the score also moves with the weather: a run of cool nights or an early frost pulls color forward, and a warm wet stretch holds it back. Outside that window you are seeing the calendar model alone, which is honest guidance and not a promise.
