What makes this different

A weather forecast cannot tell you where a rainbow will be

Niagara already supplies the water droplets. The missing pieces are direct sunlight and geometry. A primary rainbow appears about 42 degrees from the antisolar point — the point directly opposite the sun. This tool calculates the sun position every 10 minutes, estimates where the falls’ mist is being pushed by the wind, then evaluates that mist from five public viewpoints.

Direct sunlight is non-negotiable. Cloud cover is still decisive: perfect geometry does not help if a cloud blocks the sun, which is why the result is an opportunity score rather than a promise.

Model details and limitations

The model uses NWS forecast-grid cloud cover, wind speed, wind direction, precipitation probability and visibility when available. It approximates each falls’ mist source and plume displacement. Local spray is turbulent and clouds can change faster than a forecast grid, so real-world conditions can beat or miss the model.

What is the best time to see a rainbow at Niagara Falls?

Does it need to be raining?

No. Niagara Falls continuously creates a large mist plume. Sunlight hitting those airborne droplets at the correct angle can produce a rainbow on a dry day.

Which side of Niagara Falls is best?

Why did the rainbow disappear even though the score was high?
