Horseshoe Falls
A waterfall you can reach in a short walk without tackling a rough forest trail. Unlike nearby national-lakeshore falls, Horseshoe Falls sits within a privately run garden and gift-shop attraction, where admission and seasonal hours apply.
Before leaving the car
- Land manager
- Horseshoe Falls & Gift Shop, a private admission-charging operator. It is not a Michigan state park.
- Legal visitor access
- Enter through the operator's paid attraction during its published season. The city recreation plan and local visitor bureau independently identify it as a private tourist attraction.
- Where to park
- Official attraction parking at 602 Bell Avenue, Munising, Michigan 49862. Follow the signed entrance; do not navigate to the waterfall GIS coordinate.
- Walking route
- Approximately 400 feet from the parking lot, according to the operator, along the maintained visitor grounds past the gift shop. This is not the public Miners Falls forest trail.
- Visit allowance
- 25–60 minutes for the falls, gardens and optional family activities. Editorial planning estimate, not measured travel time.
- Access and pets
- The operator describes the attraction as handicap accessible and permits leashed pets. Verify a particular mobility route with the operator; we have not independently measured slope or surface.
Is this the right waterfall for your day?
Choose Horseshoe Falls for a short, low-effort visit. The waterfall is spring-fed and the landscaped grounds offer a trout pond, a botanical garden and a gnome scavenger hunt. It is especially useful for families or visitors who want an easy arrival instead of the longer walks and uneven trails at some of the region's public falls.
Choose Wagner Falls instead when you prefer a free, state-managed scenic site. Wagner has a short gravel-and-boardwalk trail and a small roadside parking area. By contrast, Horseshoe Falls charges admission but offers maintained private grounds and additional activities. Compare the Wagner Falls route.
Do not confuse this with Munising Falls. The National Park Service closed the Munising Falls Trail after the April 2025 washout; proximity on the map does not reopen it. Read the closure-specific guide.
Admission, opening season and flow
As researched October 27, 2026, the operator lists admission of $12 for adults, $9 for seniors 60+ and military/veterans, $8 for children ages 3–16, and free for ages two and under. Those are advertised prices, not a guarantee for next season. Check current admission terms before setting out.
The business lists its usual in-season hours as 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., daily, during an early-May-to-mid-October operating season. Weather and business operations can change this schedule. The spring-fed cascade may keep flowing when smaller seasonal creeks weaken, but water appearance is never guaranteed. Neither the state GIS map nor the USGS hydrography crosswalk is a live flow monitor.
The lower-risk choice is to arrive at the named visitor address during the operator's published hours. Do not use neighboring private parcels or a back route along Stutts Creek to bypass the admission entrance.
Why the place feels different
Most Upper Peninsula waterfall hikes start in a forest or finish at an overlook. Here, the short approach winds through deliberately tended grounds. You'll see the cascade at the end of a garden visit, not as a reward for a climb. The private setting makes it easy to compare flowers, stream-fed pools and the waterfall in one compact outing. It also means the rules, fees, pet policy and operating season belong to the attraction, not the National Park Service.
For a wider Munising waterfall day, pair this with Wagner Falls when its state scenic site is accessible, then use the broader interactive map to decide whether Miners Falls or Chapel Falls is worth its additional drive and walking effort. Avoid assumptions about winter roads or seasonal access.
Five documented visitor access checks
Research reviewed October 27, 2026. Public visitation is documented as a paid operator-controlled experience; this is not a live opening notice. Geographic data is checked separately from access.
- land Manager · Documented
- City of Munising recreation plan explicitly identifies Horseshoe Falls as a privately owned, admission-charging attraction accessed from Bell Avenue.
- public Access · Documented
- Munising Visitor's Bureau confirms the publicly offered visitor entrance is private and admission-based, with a gentle walking path.
- parking · Documented
- The private operator lists the arrival address 602 Bell Avenue, Munising; parking is on its own grounds. No lot coordinate is fabricated.
- trail · Documented
- The operator states the fall is approximately 400 feet from its parking lot and describes its accessible visitor route; not a certified ADA site-specific audit.
- location · Documented
- Michigan GIS mapped waterfall feature #197 is at 46.402894, -86.642575. This is the falls, not the parking lot; USGS hydro reference is 107 m away.
