Lower Hungarian Falls
A lower gorge waterfall reached by rustic trails, with steep cliffs, exposed rock and a distinct visitor decision from Upper Hungarian Falls.
Before you drive
- Land manager
- Michigan DNR-owned gorge parcels; Keweenaw Land Trust manages upper access parcel (check parcel map)
- Legal public access
- Keweenaw Land Trust describes public hiking throughout the gorge, with its upper parcel and a large Michigan state-owned section; its mapped brochure is essential because neighboring parcels are private.
- Parking and arrival
- Use the KLT-published Golf Course Road shoulder parking, near 47.173159, -88.444743. In winter park only where legally plowed; KLT says most of Golf Course Road is unplowed.
- Walking route
- From the KLT-signed Golf Course Road access, follow the rough former drive toward the gorge, take the downstream/left-side path, and use the marked public trail corridor. The entire gorge traverse is roughly two miles, with steep, eroded cliffside sections and no protective fences.
- Suggested visit allowance
- 60–150 min; this is an editorial trip-planning range, not a measured travel time.
- Best conditions for the view
- Spring melt or rain when the lower cascade carries water; roots and ledges may be slippery even in dry weather.
What makes this waterfall worth your time?
Choose the lower waterfall only if you want a challenging gorge walk; otherwise use the signed upper preserve path. Do not recommend cliff-edge shortcuts.
The lower fall is NOT the easy upper KLT preserve access. Routes descend a steep gorge, and maps should not be mistaken for a guaranteed safe trail surface.
This waterfall is one stop within a larger Michigan landscape, not a substitute for an up-to-date land-manager map. Decide on your route from the published visitor entry point, and always allow for weather, construction or trail conditions to change it.
The access decision: road, parking and trail
Parking: Use the KLT-published Golf Course Road shoulder parking, near 47.173159, -88.444743. In winter park only where legally plowed; KLT says most of Golf Course Road is unplowed.
Trail: From the KLT-signed Golf Course Road access, follow the rough former drive toward the gorge, take the downstream/left-side path, and use the marked public trail corridor. The entire gorge traverse is roughly two miles, with steep, eroded cliffside sections and no protective fences.
What the maps cannot certify: KLT's ownership map colors its 10-acre upper preserve, state lands and neighboring private parcels differently. Remain on public paths and do not improvise gorge-crossings.
Do not use the falls coordinate to navigate your vehicle. Keep to public trail corridors, respect private properties and obey posted barricades. If parking is full or a park is gated, make a different plan rather than using a road shoulder without an authorized stopping area.
Seasonal differences and safety
Spring melt or rain when the lower cascade carries water; roots and ledges may be slippery even in dry weather. These are patterns, not predictions for a particular day. Waterfall flow is highly sensitive to recent precipitation and thaw conditions; the USGS hydrography point is not a live streamgage or flow prediction.
Wet roots, loose rock, slippery ledges, ice and unprotected cliffs can make a short distance substantially more difficult. Winter driving access is a separate decision from legal trail access, and state park or roadside park vehicle gates may close seasonally.
Access evidence — five independently assessed questions
Research reviewed October 26, 2026. Geographic waterfall position, legal public access, land manager, parking and trail were checked as different facts. No on-the-ground inspection or live gate-status monitoring is claimed.
