Morgan Falls

Just south of Marquette, Morgan Creek cuts through a rocky notch below an old road. Reaching the falls is not complicated, but the correct parking and highway crossing matter more than the raw waterfall map pin. This is a nonmotorized outing with a real trailhead, not a drive-up waterfall.

Verified public trailhead and designated highway crossing; current opening and road conditions are unverified. Travel Marquette explicitly warns against parking on the dirt shoulder of high-speed M-553. Begin from the NTN South Trailhead instead.

Before leaving the car

Public trailhead
From Marquette travel south on M-553. Use the Noquemanon Trail Network South Trailhead, on the left when driving south before Rippling River Resort. Travel Marquette identifies this as the correct public parking area. Do not park on the dirt shoulder across M-553 near the gated Mount Marquette Road entrance.
Safe highway crossing
From the South Trailhead follow NTN's path south to the designated M-553 crossing, selected for better sightlines, then follow the path to Mount Marquette Road. Do not cross directly from an improvised roadside turnout or stop a car on the highway to avoid the short connecting walk.
Walking route
Continue on Mount Marquette Road on foot. Travel Marquette reports this dirt road is closed to motor vehicles; do not drive it to the falls. The visitor bureau's mapped route describes about 1.2 miles on the road, then a short footpath south toward Morgan Creek. The overall published walk is about 2.8 miles round trip, but distance may vary depending on exact parking and route choices.
Time and terrain
Allow roughly 90–150 minutes for the longer walk and photography. The road walk is generally manageable, but the final descent toward the falls is steeper and can be slick when wet. NTN's trails are shared by hikers and cyclists; stay aware of other users.
Current season
NTN describes both summer and groomed winter use of the wider South Trails network. That does not establish that the entire Morgan Falls approach is open, ice-free or suitable for hiking today. Respect trail use restrictions, winter grooming and posted temporary closures.

The correct crossing is part of the trail

M-553 can surprise visitors because the waterfall lies on the other side of the highway from the main South Trails parking. Travel Marquette explicitly cautions against stopping on the opposite shoulder because sight distances are short and traffic travels at highway speed. The signed connection takes hikers from the parking area to a place with better visibility in both directions. Even there, wait for a safe gap and follow whatever crossing markings are in place. An old waterfall GPS entry is not a substitute for a pedestrian crossing.

A closed road can still be a good walking route

Mount Marquette Road is not an invitation to keep driving into the woods. The regional visitor description states it is closed to motorized traffic on this approach. For hikers, it provides a straightforward way toward the creek, with a small connecting path near the waterfall. Bike use in the broader NTN South Trails is documented by the trail network, but obey route-specific restrictions and expect other people. The final footpath can be muddy or rocky, so do not equate a road walk with an accessible waterfall overlook.

What makes Morgan Falls different

The water drops through dark bedrock and into a small wooded basin, not over a giant vertical escarpment. The charm is partly its proximity to town and partly how quickly the roads disappear behind the trees. Autumn hardwood color can make this a worthwhile Marquette stop; snowmelt and recent rain make the creek louder, but also make rock steps slippery. There is no reason to stand at the brink or scramble into moving water to enjoy the falls.

Do not confuse nearby waterfall names

Marquette-area maps sometimes label this spot as Morgan Creek Falls or Unnamed Morgan Falls. Michigan's state waterfall dataset records a Morgan Falls feature at 46.507745, -87.446107. Nearby Carp River Falls features are also mapped in the vicinity; that does not make every named drop part of the same public hiking route or justify reusing Morgan's parking directions for a different stream. This guide is deliberately scoped to the recognized Morgan Creek visitor approach.

Winter and access decisions

NTN publishes winter trail-use information and grooming for the South Trails, but not a live waterfall-specific safety verdict. Some winter routes are groomed for fat-tire bikes or skiing, and snowshoe or foot use can affect the surface. Check the network's current trail guidance, wear traction as needed, and do not venture down the creek's steep icy banks. The designated parking lot and M-553 crossing still matter regardless of season.

Five source checks
