Pemene Falls
The Menominee River runs quietly through long forested stretches, then narrows suddenly at Pemene Falls, where dark bedrock confines the current and an old dam foundation recalls the river's industrial past. The best ordinary visitor experience is a wooded Wisconsin-side walk to the official gorge overlook, not a scramble toward the rapids.
Before leaving the car
- Park
- Menominee River State Recreation Area, co-managed by Michigan and Wisconsin DNR.
- Arrive
- Park at the end of Verheyen Lane, off Wisconsin County Road Z, where Wisconsin DNR identifies the Pemene Falls hiking-trail lot. The property's official directions link points to the Pemene area, not a surveyed parking-space coordinate. Follow signs for Pemene Falls Hiking Trail. Do not mistake Pemene Landing off Horseshoe Road for this foot trail, or use the state waterfall GIS dot as a driving destination.
- Walking route
- The established DNR trail reaches the primitive overlook in about 0.5 mile one way. The same network offers a short loop of 0.8 mile or a longer loop of 1.9 miles. These are alternate walks, not additional mileage needed to reach the overlook.
- Time allowance
- Plan about 60–120 minutes for the 0.5-mile overlook out-and-back, with more time for a loop. This is an editorial allowance for uneven footing and stops, not an official time estimate.
- What the viewpoint really is
- The DNR trail ends at the edge of a rocky gorge, not on a developed viewing deck. The official destination is a primitive overlook above the moving river. Steep slopes, natural-surface tread, exposed roots and rock make this a more serious outing than the short distance suggests; there is no documented accessible viewing platform.
- Season
- The park is listed as open year-round, but the DNR warns that property access roads are not winter-plowed and can be difficult in wet weather. Current opening and road conditions are unverified. A year-round park policy does not mean Verheyen Lane or the primitive trailhead is drivable today.
The mapped geographic waterfall point is not public parking, not an accessible trailhead and not a verified walking route. Follow land-manager signs.
The right parking lot matters
The Pemene Falls Unit has several access facilities along a long corridor. The signed hiking-trail lot is at the end of Verheyen Lane off County Road Z in Wisconsin. Pemene Landing is a separate boat launch reached from Horseshoe Road, while the Michigan shore has its own river access. For this day hike, begin at the Wisconsin Pemene Falls Hiking Trail lot and follow the official trail signs rather than informal driving tracks.
Follow the public overlook route
The 2005 DNR hiking map shows the southern parking area, a primitive road, two loop alternatives and a distinct spur to the Pemene Falls overlook. Choose the direct overlook walk if your purpose is the falls. Because the path follows old logging routes and naturally cleared tread, watch for steep rocky portions and limited directional signs at junctions. This guide intentionally avoids tracing an unverified GPS route across forest land.
The river and the viewing site are different points
Michigan GIS places the named waterfall at 45.594123, -87.777192 in the Menominee River. That is a natural geographic feature, not the parking lot and not a promise that hikers can stand at that exact coordinate. Independent natural-feature references broadly corroborate the falls position. The DNR map separately labels its sanctioned overlook, reached from the Wisconsin bank. This is why a visitor map and a waterfall database should show different kinds of places instead of collapsing them into one misleading navigation marker.
A gorge to respect
Pemene's narrow bedrock passage can carry strong turbulent water. Old concrete dam remains are visible in the area, but neither they nor a riverside island or paddlers' portage define a public walking route. There is no need to leave the signed hiking path or descend to the water to enjoy the gorge. Rock surfaces may be slippery at any water level, and high spring flows amplify the risk.
Autumn and winter decisions
Late October brings leaf-covered roots, short daylight and potentially wet forest roads. Wisconsin DNR explicitly says recreation-area roads are not plowed in winter. Check the official park and current weather before leaving, use signed access only, and turn back where roads or trail conditions prevent a safe visit. The trail's 0.5-mile designation is not evidence of current passability.
