Jumbo Falls: a public trail with three conflicting map points

Ottawa National Forest has an established short trail to Jumbo Falls near Kenton. The issue is not a lack of public forest access. It is that agency, specialist and state geographic records place the natural waterfall at materially different points along the Jumbo River.

NEW B72 FINDING · NOVEMBER 5, 2026: THE 2026 FEDERAL TRAIL AND ROAD RECORDS RESOLVE THE EARLIER POSITION BLOCKER. U.S. Forest Service Trail #60056 ends 23 metres from the specialist waterfall coordinates, and the Forest Service's published MVUM designates FR4589-B for passenger vehicles May 16 through March 14. The former generic USFS recreation pin is 904m off the waterfall; Michigan waterfall GIS #29 is 379m off. The mapped footpath is NOT ACCESSIBLE and is not proof of current road or bridge conditions. Open the verified seasonal Jumbo Falls field guide and mapped foot trail. The original October 31 geographic-review history follows below.
OLDER OCTOBER 31 RESEARCH (SUPERSEDED BY B72): The U.S. Forest Service described a public trail from the end of Forest Road 4589-B. The correct waterfall pin and latest trailhead condition need independent reconciliation. No directions to waterfall coordinates are provided.

What is verified

The U.S. Forest Service's Ottawa Waterfalls Recreation Opportunity Guide gives a trail approach through Golden Glow Road, Jumbo Pit Road and the end of FR4589-B. A regional Ottawa Forest trail guide describes a short, largely level path with two small boardwalk bridges to the Jumbo River.

Why exact geography matters

Michigan GIS #29 lies at 46.453006,-88.912138. The Forest Service brochure lists a location at 46.457753,-88.912228, while a specialist river falls account places the natural drop near 46.44963,-88.91278. The agency and specialist points are 904 metres apart. The USFS location might be a facility reference rather than the exact ledge, but that is not established. We should not draw a fictional walking polyline between these points.

What is needed before publishing a visitor map

Obtain current U.S. Forest Service GIS trailhead and Jumbo Falls geomarker/route polyline or other reliable surveyed source distinguishing the 2015 agency coordinates from the specialist falls point, establish certified designated visitor parking and the ~0.1-mile trail's correct physical destination, plus present FR4589-B road/trail restrictions. Do not route to any of the three coordinates before reconciling.

Six source checks

USFS named waterfall
USFS 2015 waterfall recreation guide explicitly names a public Jumbo Falls trail in Ottawa National Forest. Source
Forest road approach
Agency directions use Golden Glow Rd, FR4589 and FR4589-B through Jumbo Pit, but may be 11 years old and not current legal/seasonal road status. Source
Public trail
Regional trail guide describes a 0.1-mile fairly level two-bridge footpath through hardwoods near Jumbo River; exact endpoint requires reconciliation. Source
Mapped waterfall identity
Agency coordinate to specialist falls coordinate 904m; GIS source lies between, creating over-300m position discrepancies. Source
Visitor parking and map destination
Road/turnout descriptions do not tie a currently authorized public parking site to a verified falls point; no parking GPS may be synthesized. Source
Current road, river and trail
No dated 2026 route-specific road restrictions, trail bridges, gate opening or exact waterfall pin survey confirmed. Source

For a reliably mapped waterfall hike today, Yondota Falls has a much stronger named federal trailhead and independent source match.
