Montreal River · Wisconsin–Michigan border

Saxon Falls

A powerful Montreal River cascade drops into a deep gorge near a working hydroelectric plant, with its safer public overlook reached from Wisconsin.

Important arrival decision: the documented visitor overlook is on the Wisconsin side. There is no independently verified public visitor approach from the Michigan bank. The hydro project and gorge are not general hiking access. Current opening and road conditions are unverified. Check the published overview and parking.

Start at the right place

Visitor parking
Use Wisconsin-side Saxon Falls Road (unpaved) and the signed overlook parking area at 46.535797, -90.380255. From US-2, use WI-122 to County Highway B, then Saxon Falls Road. Do not drive toward the Michigan GIS waterfall point.
Walking approach
Follow the short wooded trail east of the Wisconsin-side parking area to Xcel Energy's provided overlook. Travel Wisconsin estimates 0.25–0.5 mile of gravel/dirt walking; the route is not described as wheelchair accessible.
Land and facility manager

Public viewing boundary
Publicly described overlook reached ONLY from the Wisconsin bank of the Montreal River. Xcel Energy hydroelectric project land surrounds the falls; neither the Michigan bank nor the dam and gorge are general public access routes. Current visitor opening not established.
Allow
30–75 minutes. This is planning allowance, not measured travel time.
Admission
Travel Wisconsin describes the falls as a free outdoor visitor stop; verify current access with the facility authority before setting out.
Directions to published Wisconsin-side parking

Parking coordinate is from the local recreation guide, not inferred from the waterfall GIS point.

What makes this waterfall worth seeing?

The river enters a dramatic rock gorge just upstream of Superior Falls. The plant diverts some water, so the exact size and appearance of the cascade change with conditions. Spring snowmelt and major rainfall may improve the spectacle, but this guide does not predict flow.

Choose Saxon for a managed overlook and the geology of the gorge rather than a riverbank scramble. It is a different experience from nearby Superior Falls, where the published arrival is in Michigan.

Follow the Wisconsin approach

Use Wisconsin-side Saxon Falls Road (unpaved) and the signed overlook parking area at 46.535797, -90.380255. From US-2, use WI-122 to County Highway B, then Saxon Falls Road. Do not drive toward the Michigan GIS waterfall point.

Follow the short wooded trail east of the Wisconsin-side parking area to Xcel Energy's provided overlook. Travel Wisconsin estimates 0.25–0.5 mile of gravel/dirt walking; the route is not described as wheelchair accessible.

The local recreation guide explicitly cautions that safe public viewing is from Wisconsin, not Michigan. Stay on the designated trail and overlook. Do not enter the hydroelectric infrastructure, climb steep rock, or attempt to ford the Montreal River.

Before leaving home

The lot and access road are unpaved. Storms, snow and hydroelectric operations can affect a visit. Published tourism information is not a live status feed; check land manager and local visitor notices on the day of travel. No same-day trail-opening or water flow claim is made here.

The public boat landing at Saxon Falls Flowage, noted by Wisconsin DNR, is a separate access site. It is not an alternative drive-to route to the overlook.
