Big Carp River · Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Shining Cloud Falls

Shining Cloud Falls is the sort of place the Porkies keeps for people who walk far from the road. The valley opens slowly. The Big Carp River gathers beneath old-growth hemlocks, reflecting narrow shafts of light before the water breaks across rock. From Lake of the Clouds, the route unfolds along the escarpment, then drops into the river basin. From Pinkerton, the forest funnels you toward the lakeshore before returning upstream along the river. Either way, the best part of the day is the changing landscape on the approach.

Public park trail and named trailhead verified; current road/trail conditions are unverified. This is a remote wilderness experience, not a driving destination at the falls point. Consult DNR maps and seasonal road closures before committing to the hike.

Is this the right waterfall day for you?

A major wilderness objective, not a casual waterfall stop. Select the Pinkerton Creek option for an approximately 10.6-mile round trip or the Lake of the Clouds ridge route for roughly 16.4 miles round trip; the two starts offer different terrain and time demands.

Visitor parking
Use the official Lake of the Clouds scenic parking/trailhead via M-107 for the approximately 8.2-mile one-way escarpment approach, OR the officially mapped Pinkerton Creek Trailhead parking on South Boundary Road for the shorter 5.3-mile one-way trail combination. They are distinct starting points; neither is the falls coordinate. DNR park map and latest road guidance govern vehicle access; South Boundary Road and M-107 have winter closures. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.
Walking route and time
Two official park-trail options lead to Shining Cloud Falls. From Lake of the Clouds on M-107, follow the Big Carp River Trail west approximately 8.2 miles one way (DNR trail description: 5.3 miles to Correction Line junction plus 2.9 miles to Shining Cloud). A shorter but still strenuous approach starts at Pinkerton Trail parking on South Boundary Road: Pinkerton Trail about 2.6 miles to Lake Superior Trail, follow Lake Superior Trail east approximately 1.3 miles to Big Carp River mouth, then climb about 1.4 miles upstream on Big Carp River Trail to Shining Cloud. That totals roughly 5.3 miles one way by published trail-segment distances. Both demand an all-day backcountry commitment or an overnight plan; neither is a short roadside hike.
Land and trail management
Michigan DNR operates the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and publishes the named public trails and trailhead map. The Western U.P. waterfall brochure independently identifies this fall along the park trail. A Recreation Passport or park vehicle entry permit may apply; a wilderness trail does not imply maintained stairs, a platform or cell coverage.
Seasonal and trail conditions
The DNR lists seasonal road closure on M-107 and South Boundary Road starting December 1 through late spring. Do not promise either vehicle trailhead accessible in winter or a route safe over ice. Unbridged streams, river levels and limited daylight matter.

The waterfall and the forest around it

A remote Big Carp River waterfall set beneath the Porcupine Mountains escarpment, where a long ribbon of river winds through a deep valley of old-growth hardwoods.

Expect old hemlock trunks, maple crowns, and the unbroken sound of moving water between root-filled footpaths. This is not a paved overlook. Waterlogged ground, downed timber, narrow trail and wet rock can make the effort considerably greater than a number on a map suggests. A cautious walker sees plenty from the maintained path without approaching a drop-off or fording a river.

Follow the park trail, not a pin

Michigan DNR's official trail description explicitly places Shining Cloud on BIG Carp River Trail and gives 8.2 miles from M-107 (5.3 + 2.9). DNR also publishes Pinkerton Trail (2.6 miles) plus Lake Superior Little Carp-to-Big Carp (1.3 miles) plus Big Carp rivermouth-to-Shining (1.4 miles), totalling about 5.3 miles from Pinkerton. The Western U.P. brochure independently gives 8.2 and 5.3 alternatives, and identifies a waterfall point ~99m from Michigan GIS #113. Trail distances are source-derived and should be rechecked on current DNR maps, not represented as precise surveying.

The state waterfall GIS lists 'Shinning Cloud Falls' with an apparent name misspelling and river field 'LITTLE CARP RIVER'. DNR's official trail guide and regional brochure consistently place SHINING CLOUD on BIG CARP RIVER. The public guide uses official Big Carp identity and retains source #113 crosswalk with discrepancy notes, rather than generating a duplicate Little Carp destination.

Before you leave the trailhead

Review the DNR park trail map, the DNR trail descriptions, the regional falls map and the park's road, pass and wilderness notices. Save the map offline and allow extra time for route choices, safe rest stops and the return. Seasonal closures are not inferred from the fact that a waterfall is geographically present.

Five sources of visitor confidence

Land manager
Michigan DNR manages Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
Public trail
DNR's named hiking trail descriptions establish the public corridor.
Parking
DNR official park map identifies the named public trailhead, not a point at the natural waterfall.
Named falls route
Western U.P. waterfall brochure names this waterfall and its approach via the park trail.
Fall identity
Michigan GIS #113 and regional waterfall coordinates agree geographically within about 99 metres; no precise parking coordinate was inferred.

Current opening, parking and trail status are NOT live monitored. Follow posted rules and turn back when stream crossings or the trail are unsafe.

Make a connected waterfall day

There are different commitments within this same park. For additional public trail-based falls, compare Trappers Falls · Explorers Falls, or Greenstone Falls for a shorter forest walk. The full U.P. waterfall explorer keeps locations and arrival evidence separate.
