WHAT MATTERS MOST
Four weather signals change a Parkway decision
Long-view overlooks lose much of their value when the ridge is inside low cloud. Short walks, forest stops and waterfalls can still work.
Wind matters more at exposed overlooks and high ridges than it does in sheltered valleys. It can also make a cool mountain day feel substantially harsher.
Brief showers may be workable. Thunderstorms can change hiking, overlook and photography plans quickly, especially on exposed terrain.
The Parkway climbs and descends repeatedly. Dress for the high point of your route, not just the city where you started.
Morning haze, afternoon convection and sunset timing can make the same corridor better at one hour than another.
Start with current Parkway closures. A perfect forecast does not make a closed segment drivable.
