Why the map and lock feed are separate
AIS is excellent for vessel identity and position, but can be delayed or incomplete. LPMS is the Corps' lock-operations record. Melvin Price Live uses each source for what it actually knows instead of forcing them into a false match.

The river panel uses the Corps' St. Louis District water-management data at Mel Price. Tailwater trend matters to understanding the river today; flow is shown only when the official time series resolves cleanly.

The National Great Rivers Museum sits beside the active lock complex. USACE currently publishes free public walk-in lock tours each day at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM; the museum's normal hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

How Big Is This Lock?
Melvin Price has a 1,200-by-110-foot main chamber and a 600-by-110-foot auxiliary chamber. The diagram below keeps those two chambers at a 2:1 length relationship and places an illustrative 15-barge, three-wide-by-five-long tow inside the main chamber to show why the full-size lock matters.

What You're Watching
A Mississippi tow is not the same thing as a tugboat
On the inland rivers, the working vessel is usually called a towboat or pushboat even though it pushes most of its barges ahead. Large line-haul tows can be assembled several barges wide and several long. The lock's 1,200-foot main chamber is built around that scale of commerce.
Can we tell what a tow is carrying?
Sometimes the barge type is visually recognizable, but the public near-real-time LPMS feed intentionally does not publish privileged company or commodity detail for a specific movement. This tool therefore never labels an active tow as carrying grain, petroleum, chemicals or another cargo unless a separate authoritative source confirms it.
Why Melvin Price matters
Melvin Price replaced the old Locks and Dam 26 and sits at an important transition in the Upper Mississippi navigation system near the St. Louis confluence. USACE reported 45,857,531 tons and 4,797 lockages here in 2024.
Visitor logic
The best time to visit is not simply “when the museum is open.” A useful window is when active or pending lock traffic overlaps with decent outdoor conditions and, ideally, a scheduled tour.
