Fall gardening decision · United States
Should I plant garlic now?
Check garlic planting readiness by location, soil temperature and whether your ground is workable. NOAA frost context, not a guessed soil-freeze date.
Soil temperature comes from your thermometer, never inferred from air temperature.
Change an input to update your decision. This tool does not forecast when your specific bed freezes.
Why the decision works this way
Penn State Extension recommends fall planting roughly three weeks before the ground freezes for root development. Air frost dates are not ground-freeze dates; local soil and cultivar matter.
Read university extension planting guidance.
Official context: NOAA climate normals and NWS weather data. Historical frost dates are regional, not a soil temperature measurement.
