Overlooked Falls

A good waterfall outing does not always require a long hike. Along the Little Carp River, a forest path quickly leads to a footbridge and a small cascade tucked among worn rock and moss.

Public visitor route documented; current open status is not verified live. Michigan DNR states that South Boundary Road is closed to ordinary vehicles from Headquarters Road south to Pinkerton Trailhead from December 1 through late spring. Neither a summer trailhead description nor a mapped waterfall confirms winter vehicle access. Current opening and road conditions are unverified. Read the official park page before driving.

Documented parking
Signed Little Carp River Trailhead parking at the end of Little Carp River Road, entered from South Boundary Road. Use this lot, not the mapped waterfall coordinates.
Walking route
From the signed Little Carp River Road trailhead, follow the Little Carp River Trail a few hundred feet to the first footbridge. Overlooked Falls is just downstream; check the bridge-side views without scrambling along the bank.
Plan on
20–50 min at this stop, depending on trail conditions; editorial allowance, not measured travel time
Access
Public Michigan DNR state-park walking route from the Little Carp River Road lot. No water-flow or current road-opening data is supplied here.
Season
Spring snowmelt gives the small cascades more volume; moss and autumn color distinguish the shady river setting.

Your starting point is the signed park trailhead, not the waterfall coordinates.

What this waterfall feels like

The river is narrow here, and the attraction is the setting: small ledges, hardwoods, dark green stream banks, and the sound of water below the trees. The cascades are modest in height. In dry periods the water can be quiet, but this should never be mistaken for a missing waterfall or for a measured flow forecast.

A short, quiet cascade a few hundred feet from the Little Carp River footbridge, an ideal introductory stop before the longer Greenstone Falls hike. Overlooked Falls is beside the first bridge; Greenstone Falls is a separate waterfall farther along the same river trail. Do not mistake their pins or hiking distances.

Find the right public approach

Park at the signed Little Carp River Trailhead. Walk along the established Little Carp River Trail toward the first bridge. Look just downstream for Overlooked Falls; you should not need to leave the official route or climb down an unmarked riverbank. After rain, wood, moss and roots can be slick, so a short route still deserves attention.

Pick Overlooked for the short stop from the Little Carp River parking area, then decide if you want to continue to Greenstone on the longer two-mile round-trip route.

Choose the outing that fits your day

The same trail continues toward Greenstone Falls. If you only have time for one small river waterfall, Overlooked is the shorter choice. If you want a fuller forest walk, continue on the official trail toward Greenstone and treat the latter as a separate destination. You do not need to move the car between them.

For a longer but related outing, Greenstone Falls lies farther along the Little Carp River Trail. For an interpretive mine-history route, Little Union Gorge and Nonesuch Falls offer different experiences elsewhere in the Porcupine Mountains.

Seasonal road and trail reality

Michigan DNR states that South Boundary Road is closed to ordinary vehicles from Headquarters Road south to Pinkerton Trailhead from December 1 through late spring. Neither a summer trailhead description nor a mapped waterfall confirms winter vehicle access.

The park's road system has seasonal vehicle closures. The footbridge and river stones can be wet and icy. Don't use this as a winter driving itinerary; check DNR conditions first.

Snow, ice, high water and trail erosion can change whether a published summer route is reasonable. This guide does not calculate today's waterfall flow, park-road status, or winter trail safety. Confirm current conditions with the Michigan DNR before setting out.

Watch the river, not just your map

This is a state-park trail, not an open invitation to follow the stream. Stay at established viewing spots and do not assume there is a safe crossing beyond the marked bridge. Pets should remain leashed under park rules. A single unmapped spur could take a walker far from the parking lot.

Independent research and source checks

Reviewed October 28, 2026. Five questions are checked separately. A state-mapped waterfall does not itself establish parking, legal visitor access, or a safe trail. Public route information is published guidance, not a same-day inspection.
