Central U.P. · Marquette · Dead River
Wright Street Falls
Where the Dead River meets Marquette’s industrial history, water slips over bedrock under a towering penstock. It is a modest but rewarding short walk, not the rugged Dead River Falls gorge farther upstream.
Plan the actual visit
- Where
- Wright Street west of central Marquette, near the Board of Light and Power and Noquemanon North Trails.
- Allow
- 15–30 minutes at the falls, an editorial short-stop allowance, not measured travel time or a guaranteed accessible path.
- Park
- Travel Marquette describes a dirt lot off Wright Street near the Board of Light and Power and a smaller lot closer to the falls. Choose a signed public space rather than a roadside shoulder.
- On foot
- Walk toward the river on the existing public path and cross the boardwalk. The tourism authority describes approximately 450 feet from its closer public parking to the cascade below the penstock.
- Expect
- Natural rock, uneven/possibly wet path surfaces and industrial water-control infrastructure. The cascade is approximately 10 feet in published visitor guidance; flow is influenced by hydropower operations.
- Do not
- Walk on the penstock, access a powerhouse or utility enclosure, climb over barriers, or follow these directions to McClure’s upstream Dead River Falls.
Why this falls is different
It is worth noticing how the river landscape and the electric power era meet. The bedrock ledges, flowing water, and penstock visible above the river are all part of this viewpoint. A modest cascade can be a memorable pause because its industrial setting is unlike the forest gorges farther into the U.P.
Do not confuse it with Dead River Falls. The famous multi-drop Dead River gorge near the McClure hydropower site is much farther upstream and much more difficult. The project’s separate access review found a historic FERC private-property warning along that gorge trail. Nothing about this publicly described Wright Street footpath grants permission to enter the upstream route.
What to check before departing
Review current Noquemanon North Trails notices and posted utility signage. Conditions may change with snow, ice or facility operations. The published path description is not an assessment of wheelchair accessibility or winter maintenance. Never infer water volume from a distant gauge or a season alone.
Five evidence checks
- Trail network
- Noquemanon North Trails / BLP Wright Street access — identifies the public trail network; precise penstock-side ownership boundaries are not asserted.
- Visitor use
- Travel Marquette — lists Wright Street Falls as an easy public waterfall visit.
- Parking
- Travel Marquette parking directions — names two dirt parking choices off Wright Street, but no surveyed lot GPS.
- Walking route
- Travel Marquette walking directions — describes the short river path, boardwalk, and roughly 450-foot approach.
- Geography
- Visitor-published falls coordinate: 46.56588, -87.44576. This coordinate never functions as a car-routing destination.
