North side / Visitor Center

The classic close-up choice. You are beside the ship canal with the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center immediately at hand and an unobstructed look at vessels entering or leaving.

How this live Duluth ship schedule works

1. Evidence first

Only recent AIS reports are eligible. Stale positions, stopped ships without useful motion, bad coordinates and weak route evidence are removed before a visitor recommendation exists.

2. Build valid candidates

The engine looks for a Duluth-bound vessel moving toward the canal, or a close-in harbor/lake vessel whose course points toward the canal. It models a broad passage window from current distance and speed.

3. Pick the useful next watch

When several valid candidates exist, the decision layer chooses among those ships only. Near-term timing, evidence quality and visitor interest matter; it cannot invent another ship or rewrite a time window.

Why not just show an ETA? Because Duluth-Superior is an operating port, not an airline gate. Ship speeds, berths, weather, tug work and entrance choice can change. A wider, evidence-bounded window is more honest and more useful for a visitor deciding when to head to the canal.

When is the next ship coming under the Aerial Lift Bridge?

The top card is the page’s best supported near-term watch based on fresh AIS. If it says there is no supported passage to call, do not interpret that as “no ships today.” The published Harbor Lookout forecast remains a useful later-traffic cross-check.

Can the camera tell me whether the ship is coming?

Use video to confirm what is visible around the canal right now, not as a schedule. The camera operator can pan or zoom elsewhere, and a vessel can still slow, berth or use the Superior Entry.

How accurate is the anticipated passage window?

It is intentionally a window. The estimate assumes the vessel broadly continues its recent speed and course. Commercial operations can change that quickly, so precision narrows only when a vessel is close to the canal and the evidence is stronger.

Why might a Twin Ports vessel not pass Canal Park?

The Duluth-Superior harbor has more than one entrance. A ship’s presence in the harbor or on western Lake Superior does not by itself prove it will use the Duluth Ship Canal, which is why the candidate engine requires route evidence.

What is the best place for a first-time visitor?

The north side of the ship canal near the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center is the simplest starting point: the canal, bridge, lighthouse and visitor center are together in one walkable place.
