Normal bridge rules. The posted maximum speed is 45 mph.
High-profile vehicles should travel no faster than 20 mph.
High-profile vehicles wait for an Authority vehicle and cross slowly behind it.
No high-profile vehicles. Passenger vehicles not towing may cross at 20 mph or less.
The bridge is closed to all traffic until the Authority reopens it.
These numbers are planning references, not a forecast formula. MDOT says restrictions may begin at lower speeds when other hazardous conditions exist. The Bridge Authority uses gauges on the bridge, but it does not publish a live bridge-deck wind number in the public conditions feed used by this site's live tool.
Vehicle classification
What counts as a high-profile vehicle?
MDOT's list is broader than just motorhomes and semi-trucks. It includes vehicles and loads that can present a larger surface to the wind:
Recreational vehicles and campers are treated as high-profile for wind restrictions.
Enclosed trailers qualify, as do open trailers hauling anything.
A cap, tonneau cover, or any item in the bed can make a pickup high-profile.
Panel trucks, vans, and work trucks with mounted toolboxes, ladders, or equipment are included.
What about an empty pickup?
An empty pickup without a cap, tonneau cover, cargo, or mounted equipment is not on MDOT's high-profile list. Bridge Authority staff make the final on-site classification, especially during a restriction.
Secure more than the load
MDOT specifically warns that tonneau covers and camper awnings can come loose in Straits winds. Check the awning, roof equipment, ladders, cargo, covers, hitch, and trailer doors before approaching the bridge.
When escorts are active
Where RVs and trailers queue
South-side queue
Line up on the east side of the bridge approach just past Jamet Street, Exit 339. Stay queued until an Authority vehicle arrives.
North-side queue
After the toll booths, line up on the west side of the bridge approach. Stay queued until an Authority vehicle arrives.
MDOT explains that the escort vehicle keeps high-profile traffic at 20 mph or less, depending on conditions. Do not enter the bridge on your own while an escort requirement is active.
Planning without false precision
Can you predict tomorrow's restriction?
Not reliably. A National Weather Service forecast near Mackinaw City can show when approach wind may become stronger, but it is not the bridge's own gauge and cannot predict the Authority's future decision. Other hazards, including ice, fog, visibility, freezing rain, and falling ice, can also trigger warnings or closures.
The Mackinac Bridge Live tool shows the current official status first, then clearly labels nearby NOAA observations and NWS approach forecasts as off-bridge context. It does not claim an official bridge wind or invent a best crossing window.

RV and trailer crossing questions
Can an RV cross during a high-wind advisory?
Yes, if the official condition is an advisory rather than a partial or full closure. MDOT says high-profile vehicles should cross at no more than 20 mph and follow posted instructions.
Can I tow a trailer during a partial closure?
No. During a partial closure, only passenger vehicles that are not towing may cross, at no more than 20 mph.
Do gusts trigger the official threshold?
MDOT describes the published thresholds as sustained wind from any direction, not gusts. Gusts can still make a crossing uncomfortable. Always follow the current official status and staff instructions.
Can Bridge Authority staff drive my RV across?
