The NOAA number above describes weather near the Straits, not on the bridge, and cannot override the official status.

These thresholds use sustained wind from any direction. Gusts can still make a crossing uncomfortable, but they are not the official trigger.

          Mackinac Bridge Crossing Questions

Is the Mackinac Bridge closed right now?

The live panel at the top reads the current Mackinac Bridge Authority report and identifies open, advisory, escort, partial-closure, and closed conditions. If that feed is unavailable, this tool will not guess. Use the direct official-status link instead.

Is the wind shown here measured on the bridge?

No. The Bridge Authority does not publish a real-time bridge-deck wind or gust reading in the public conditions feed used by this tool. The NOAA number comes from Mackinaw City or the western Straits and is shown only as off-bridge weather context. The official bridge report always controls.

Will the Mackinac Bridge close tomorrow?

No weather forecast can guarantee a closure. The hourly cards show when forecast sustained wind approaches MDOT's published ranges, but ice, visibility, storms, maintenance, and the bridge's own readings can change the decision. Recheck immediately before leaving.

What is the best time to cross the Mackinac Bridge?

There is no reliable public forecast for the easiest crossing window because the Bridge Authority does not publish future restriction decisions or live wait times. Compare the current official status, both cameras, NWS approach forecast, radar, and Mi Drive events here, then recheck immediately before you leave.

What counts as a high-profile vehicle?

MDOT includes semis, RVs, campers, vans, panel trucks, enclosed trailers, open trailers carrying anything, pickups with caps, tonneau covers or cargo, and work trucks with mounted toolboxes, ladders, or equipment. Use the checker above or read the complete RV and trailer guide.

Can someone drive my vehicle across for me?

Yes. The Bridge Authority offers driver assistance 24 hours a day for $10 plus the vehicle toll. The driver must be at least 18 and complete the Authority's waiver and checklist. See the step-by-step pickup instructions for each direction.

How much is the Mackinac Bridge toll?

Passenger vehicles are currently $2 per axle, usually $4 for a two-axle car. Other vehicles are $5 per axle. Use the calculator above or see the full toll, towing, and payment guide.

          How do restriction-change alerts work?

Enable page alerts and leave the tool open. It checks for a change in the official condition level and can send a browser notification. Close the tab or the browser and alerts stop, so treat this as a convenience and recheck the official status directly before you drive.

          What happens during falling-ice closures?

The bridge closes to public traffic, and the reopening time cannot be predicted. The Bridge Authority says falling-ice closures have averaged several hours, but individual closures vary widely. Do not attempt to cross until the official status says the bridge has reopened.

How the crossing answer is made

The Crossing Confidence label uses the current official Bridge Authority status, your selected vehicle class, direction-specific lane notes, and whether the official feed is available. It never treats nearby NOAA wind or the Mackinaw City forecast as a bridge-deck measurement.
