Plan Your Mackinac Bridge Crossing
The predeparture checklist for restrictions, vehicle class and tolls. For live bridge status and wind observations use the existing current-conditions tool; this page never invents a closure or reopening time.
Your five-minute crossing decision
- Check the Authority status. Open the live Mackinac Bridge conditions tool and verify that the source is current. An unavailable report means unknown, not open.
- Classify your vehicle. A camper, van, pickup with a tonneau cover or cargo, RV or trailer may be high-profile. Read the RV and trailer rules rather than assume passenger-car restrictions apply.
- Calculate your toll. Use the axle-aware calculator with vehicle class and towing information.
- Choose a lawful pause. Before approaching a possible closure, plan a stop in Mackinaw City to the south or St. Ignace to the north. Do not block I-75 or enter a restricted approach.
- Recheck close to the crossing. The bridge condition may change after departure. Signs and Bridge Authority staff instructions always control.
What changes with your vehicle?
| Vehicle | Critical predeparture check |
|---|---|
| Passenger car, nothing towed | Official closure level, lanes and toll. A partial closure may still allow qualifying passenger cars under restrictions. |
| RV, camper, enclosed trailer or van | High-profile advisories, escort conditions and partial-closure prohibitions. |
| Pickup with a bed cover or cargo | High-profile classification even if the truck is not especially tall. Secure loads and confirm official restrictions. |
| Driver uncomfortable crossing | Check Bridge Authority driver assistance eligibility, cost and request instructions; do not improvise. |
Understand official wind levels
These are MDOT's policy reference thresholds for sustained wind, not gust forecasts or current bridge readings. The Authority may impose restrictions at lower speeds due to other hazards. Never use a local weather app to override an official order.
| Sustained wind reference | Typical restriction |
|---|---|
| 20–35 mph | High-wind advisory; high-profile vehicles should travel no faster than 20 mph. |
| 35–50 mph | High-profile vehicle escorts required; follow Authority queue and speed directions. |
| 50–65 mph | Partial closure to high-profile vehicles; qualifying passenger cars face speed restrictions. |
| 65 mph and above | Full closure to all traffic. |
See MDOT's official wind explanation and the current official status panel. Forecasts do not guarantee future restriction levels.
Northbound and southbound logistics
Northbound: Mackinaw City is at the southern end of the bridge. Plan a safe lawful stopping point before the approach when advisories are likely. If an escort is officially ordered, follow signs and Bridge Authority personnel.
Southbound: St. Ignace lies at the northern end. MDOT identifies the southbound high-profile escort queue just past toll booths on the west side of the approaches. Do not enter a queue without official instruction.
A closure can last an unknown amount of time. No forecast or crossing-planner page can promise a reopening hour, ideal departure time or absence of traffic delay.
Toll, Bridge Walk and backup plans
See the 2026 Mackinac Bridge toll guide for passenger cars, larger vehicles, MacPass and payment details. The operator makes the final vehicle classification. On Labor Day, the annual Bridge Walk brings a planned morning closure; check published official dates and notices rather than assume ordinary operations.
If you want scenic bridge views without driving across, the Authority describes Bridge View Park on the St. Ignace side. This is a shore-viewing alternative, not authorization to walk on the bridge outside a designated event.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Mackinac Bridge always open?
It normally carries traffic around the clock, but wind, weather, ice, incidents and the annual Bridge Walk can lead to restrictions or closure. Check official current status.
Can I cross the Mackinac Bridge in an RV during high winds?
RVs and many other vehicles are classed as high-profile. Advisories may require slower speeds, escorts may be required, and partial closures prohibit high-profile crossings. Follow the current Authority direction.
What if the current condition feed is unavailable?
Treat bridge status as unknown. Check the official Mackinac Bridge Authority condition report directly and never turn a stale or missing reading into an all-clear.
Can I predict when a wind closure will end?
No. No reliable reopening time can be inferred from a forecast. Wait for the Bridge Authority's official status transition.
How do I calculate the Mackinac Bridge toll?
Use the existing axle-aware Mackinac Bridge toll calculator. Trailers, commercial vehicles and unusual configurations can cost differently from a passenger car.
