Start with the official beach-risk forecast. Then see what nearby waves, wind, water temperature and tides are doing without turning unlike signals into a fake safety score.

Use a coastal city, beach town or ZIP. The tool first verifies that the location is within 25 miles of an applicable NWS beach-forecast area; only then does it add nearby buoy and tide context.

1. Official risk first

The National Weather Service beach forecast can include rip-current or swim risk, surf, winds, weather and water temperature. A High or Moderate category is never downgraded because an offshore buoy looks calmer.

2. Observations explain what changed

NDBC stations report measured waves, wind and water temperature when those sensors are available. The tool shows station distance and a roughly three-hour change rather than pretending an offshore station is the exact beach.

3. Tides explain timing, not safety

NOAA CO-OPS predictions show the next high and low tides near tidal coasts. Great Lakes water levels are not treated as tides, and missing tide data does not become a favorable signal.

4. Local rules still win

Beach flags, closures, lifeguards, emergency instructions, storms, shoreline structures and local currents can matter more than a regional forecast. This tool does not declare swimming or boating safe.

It does not create a universal recreation-safety score, infer conditions where data is missing, or substitute a distant buoy or tide station for a coastal location.
