What makes this waterfall different?
The Sturgeon River funnels into bedrock channels and a dark gorge. Local published coordinates are for the waterfall; use the roadside park as your start.
Late spring and fall. These are typical seasonal characteristics, not a prediction for a particular date. Spring volume, rain, low water and ice can change the appearance and the safest viewing points.
Before you leave the car
Natural roots and rocky ledges beside the Sturgeon River; do not assume edge access or winter upkeep. Keep well back from unsupported rock lips and river edges.
Remain on designated trails and platforms. Wet roots, drop-offs and powerful currents can create hazards well beyond the actual plunge pool.
Choose the signed trailhead, not the waterfall pin
Landowner and trail authority: Michigan Technological University (landowner); North Country Trail Peter Wolfe Chapter (trail maintenance); MDOT (US-41 parking).
Parking: Canyon Falls MDOT Roadside Park off US-41 near Alberta; seasonal daylight parking, no overnight parking. Lot gate typically closes late October and reopens toward late April.
Trail route: Roughly 500-foot rocky spur from roadside park to the North Country Trail, then follow the signed trail roughly another half mile to the stone barrier overlook. Includes footbridge, boardwalk sections, roots and uneven gorge terrain.
Viewing decision: An accessible public hike with a real trail, not a riverbank roadside pullout. Stop at the stone-barrier overlook and do not descend unsupported gorge edges.
Restrictions: NCTA March 2024 guide reports a seasonal closed gate at the MDOT park, limited plowed space near gate, no overnight parking, and potential ticketing on US-41 shoulders. Conditions can change, especially in winter; verify current signage.
