Lepisto Falls

There is a quieter side to the Presque Isle River. Before its water rushes through the popular gorge near Lake Superior, it slides over a broad ledge at Lepisto Falls. The North Country Trail slips through tall hemlocks and mixed hardwoods to reach this stretch, where the river speaks through a forest without the platforms and crowds of the lower scenic area.

Public trailhead, state-park walking route and waterfall geography verified. Current opening and road conditions are unverified. County Road 519 traffic and winter parking require care. The source waterfall marker is not a vehicle destination.

From County Road 519 to the river

Verified arrival
From M-28 near Wakefield, follow County Road 519 north approximately 12 miles to the named North Country Trail trailhead parking by the road crossing. The NCTA Ni-Miikanaake 2025 segment guide confirms an actual trailhead and parking area there. Cross CR519 with traffic caution, follow blue blazes east into the state park, and rely on current NCTA map MI-008 rather than routing to the waterfall's geographic point. Winter parking clearing and present road/trail conditions are not confirmed.
Walking route
From the County Road 519 NCT parking area, cross the highway carefully and follow the blue-blazed NCT east through old-growth forest. The Western U.P. visitor map describes approximately 0.6 mile along the NCT plus about 0.2 mile on the falls side approach, roughly 1.6 miles out-and-back. NCTA's 2025 MI-008 trail description confirms the maintained trail passes Lepisto Falls and notes a spring near mile MI-43.1. Remain on the established trail and avoid steep riverbanks; continue north past the falls only if prepared for the rope-assisted steep climb beyond the footbridge.
Walking effort
Roughly 0.8 mile each way, about 1.6 miles round-trip, using the visitor bureau's estimate. This is a rustic trail with hills, roots and mud, not an accessible boardwalk. Budget 60–110 minutes for the trail, waterfall view and careful highway crossing.
Land and trails
The North Country Trail Association Ni-Miikanaake Chapter identifies this section as Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park land, with the CR519 trailhead and falls on map segment MI-008. Michigan DNR is the park land manager. A Recreation Passport or other park entry permit may be needed.
Seasonal status
Winter use changes the trip completely. The DNR says the Presque Isle Scenic Area remains accessible via County Road 519, but that does not guarantee the particular NCT road-crossing lot is plowed. The trail is not groomed, and slippery river ledges and steep nearby slopes make ice conditions hazardous. Check current posted trail closures before driving.

A place to slow down

From the NCT parking near County Road 519, cross the highway at the signed trail crossing after checking for traffic in both directions. Once inside the woods, the trail turns away from the road and begins to feel remote. The surface changes from firm tread to roots, fallen leaves and occasionally muddy places. After roughly six-tenths of a mile, follow the waterfall approach described in the regional map. Bring offline navigation for MI-008; the trail may not have a sign at every turn.

Lepisto is a broad low river fall rather than a towering cliff. In spring, the Presque Isle gathers strength across the entire rock shelf. In late summer, exposed rock lets you see channels cut by years of flow. Its setting is sheltered, with branches over the water and a quiet riverbank that can be especially beautiful during autumn color. None of those seasonal descriptions promises a live flow level on a particular day.

Don't mistake a longer gorge walk for the short hike

The trail north of Lepisto is a more demanding commitment. The chapter documents a footbridge and then a steep rope-assisted climb as the NCT continues toward South Boundary Road. That is a different hike, not the short waterfall outing. Turn around at the established falls viewpoint unless you have the current trail map and time for a remote walk. Keep away from wet rock shelves and do not enter the moving water.

How Iagoo Falls differs

Older lists refer to Iagoo Falls farther downstream, but the published coordinates disagree significantly. Michigan's geographic layer maps Iagoo much farther north than the regional waterfall brochure. This guide intentionally does not append an unverified Iagoo side trip, walking line or parking location to your Lepisto hike. Stay with the trail whose parking and access are documented.

Before the drive

Use the NCTA 2025 Ni-Miikanaake segment guide for the crossing and route, the chapter's latest maps for changes, trail alerts for closures and the DNR park notices for fees and season-specific road limits. This is wilderness, not a roadside picnic-stop. Carry water, shoes with grip, a map saved offline and enough daylight for the return.

Five checks behind this route

Land manager
NCTA 2025 MI-008 places the trail in Michigan's Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, managed by DNR.
Public walking access
The maintainer names the NCT and Lepisto Falls on the same public park trail.
Actual visitor parking
The chapter explicitly documents County Road 519 trailhead parking. No invented GPS coordinates or winter-plowing promise.
Route and walking effort
The regional waterfall map gives approximately 0.6 mile on the NCT and 0.2 mile to the falls. Use NCTA's current trail markings.
Natural falls identity
Michigan GIS #79 agrees closely with the regional map's Lepisto falls point. Neither is a parking pin.

Waterfall locations are for geographic orientation. Do not use their coordinates to generate a hiking path, assume a river crossing, or bypass marked park trails.

Another waterfall day nearby

For viewpoints with more developed railings and platforms, visit the separate Manabezho Falls, Manido Falls and Nawadaha Falls along the Presque Isle Scenic Area. Lepisto offers the quiet NCT walk; the lower gorge is a different park entrance.
