How to use the ice-out outlook
Find a lake, choose a target date, and compare the probability window with the historical baseline. The interactive forecast loads after the page opens; a loading message is not an ice-out observation. During spring breakup, available weather and validated thaw signals can adjust the outlook. Outside that season, use the next spring outlook as planning context, rather than treating today's weather as a months-ahead prediction.
Use the satellite date control to compare images, keeping cloud cover separate from lake ice. For wider spring context, compare measured snowpack and snowmelt and river gauge conditions. Neither establishes that a particular lake is ice-free. Check local observations before making a trip decision.
Using the Lake Simcoe ice-out forecast
When will Lake Simcoe, Ontario be ice-free?
The forecast updates from the lake’s calibrated seasonal baseline, live spring weather and available seasonal thaw signals. The displayed date is a probability window, not a guaranteed breakup date.
Is the Lake Simcoe, Ontario ice-out forecast live?
During the active spring season, live weather and validated thaw signals can adjust the historical baseline. Outside the active season, the page shows the next spring outlook without pretending current weather predicts months ahead.
Is this an ice-safety forecast?
No. Ice-out timing does not estimate ice thickness or whether the ice can support people, vehicles or equipment.
Data and forecast method
Lake names come from authoritative national sources: USGS GNIS in the United States and Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Geographical Names Database in Canada. Search runs through the same lake-search endpoint for both countries.
Where an unambiguous HydroLAKES match exists, the model adds lake area, estimated mean depth, elevation, shoreline development and volume. Historical ice-out observations are attached only when the match is safe; otherwise nearby long-record lakes provide regional calibration.
During active spring breakup, validated seasonal freezing/thaw physics and operational NWS or ECCC weather can adjust the historical baseline. NASA GIBS imagery is shown as visual evidence rather than converted into an unsupported open-water percentage.
