Get oriented on the shore

The markers identify places, not where warmer swimming conditions are guaranteed. Buoy positions are separately marked when a destination is selected.

Understand Grand Haven before you enter the lake

The shore at Grand Haven State Park faces open Lake Michigan. Its wide sandy beach and famous pier are compelling on warm days, but neither sunshine nor an inviting air temperature guarantees comfortable water. Wind-driven changes can alter water temperature and conditions near shore surprisingly quickly.

Why the Port Sheldon buoy is useful, but not a beach thermometer

The buoy designated 45029 is located offshore between Grand Haven and Holland. It can provide a recent in-water observation when operating, but the reading is from its own location and sensor depth. The river mouth, protected pockets, and shallow water at Grand Haven can differ. ShoreFeel never relabels this reading as the temperature at Grand Haven State Park.

Make a better visit decision

For lounging, pay attention to the wind and sunshine. For swimming, consider recent water observations and how abruptly immersion could differ from the air. For paddling, plan for an unexpected swim, not just the predicted air temperature. For any entry into the water, consult the official beach hazard and water-quality sources first.
