The markers identify places, not where warmer swimming conditions are guaranteed. Buoy positions are separately marked when a destination is selected.

Why Grand Traverse Bay needs its own temperature story

Traverse City sits at the south end of Grand Traverse Bay, where landforms shelter water from some open-lake effects. Shallow beaches and protected areas may warm differently from the deep main lake, while strong winds and circulation still matter. A single Lake Michigan average does not capture the water at Clinch Park or West Bay.

What if the local buoy is not reporting?

The historical Grand Traverse Bay South buoy (45020) is seasonal and has not always been operational. ShoreFeel reports its data as unavailable whenever there is no observation within six hours. It does not substitute the Sleeping Bear Dunes offshore station or infer a bay temperature from the daily whole-lake mean.

Find the experience you came for

A walk along the bay, an afternoon on the sand and time in the water involve different exposures. Sun can warm a person standing on shore without warming the whole bay; wind has an especially noticeable effect when exiting the water wet. Use our personalized explanation as context and check official advisories before swimming or paddling.
