Retrieving the latest official lakewide temperature. Values remain unavailable until confirmed by NOAA.
How the lake has changed
NOAA daily whole-lake surface average, past 30 available dates. It is not a beach thermometer.
Get oriented on the shore
The markers identify places, not where warmer swimming conditions are guaranteed. Buoy positions are separately marked when a destination is selected.
Choose the water you are visiting
The beach at Grand Haven and the sheltered Grand Traverse Bay shoreline do not share one reliable swimming temperature. Explore each place as its own environment.
Why Lake Michigan temperatures can change abruptly
A stretch of sunny weather may warm water near the surface, but persistent wind can redistribute it. Along an exposed coast, wind can move surface water away and allow colder water from depth to rise near shore, a process known as upwelling. A lakewide daily average often misses what swimmers actually experience at that moment.
What the graph measures
The 30-day line is a whole-lake satellite-derived surface average, not a location forecast. It helps show seasonal warming and cooling; always check a recent local observation if you need a particular beach reading.
When the lake is cold
Cold water matters even when the air is hot. Keep temperature interpretation separate from official beach warnings, dangerous currents, wave conditions and personal swimming ability. ShoreFeel never issues an all-clear.
