Follow the U.P. snowmobile network

Designated trails December–March

Michigan's state-designated snowmobile network is generally open December 1–March 31, with grooming conditional on adequate snow.

The moveCheck the DNR's trail and closure map, then choose a specific legal trailhead and review permits.

Before you go: A regional marker is NOT a parking spot. Verify signed routes, closures, permits and forecast visibility; never enter private land.

Take the family sledding on the Dune Climb

Snow-covered designated sledding area

The NPS permits sleds, saucers and tubes in the designated Dune Climb sledding area when covered with snow.

The moveConfirm the permitted snow-covered zone and walk the designated area before the first run.

Before you go: The dunes can have dangerous ice and avalanche conditions on steep slopes. Do not expand beyond the designated zone.

Try a real ice luge track

Luge and skating in Muskegon State Park

Michigan DNR lists a winter luge track, skating trail, ski trails, rentals and adaptive opportunities inside Muskegon State Park.

The moveStart with the operator's conditions page and ticket guidance; book only what is actually open.

Before you go: As of late October 2026 the park reported its ice luge, rink and ski activities closed for the fall; winter operation depends on weather.

Stand beneath towering ice curtains

Land-based ice-formation viewing

NPS identifies inland sandstone cliffs near Sand Point Road as the most accessible places to see winter ice formations.

The movePark at Sand Point Beach, walk back along Sand Point Road and follow signed permitted viewing routes.

Before you go: No roadside parking on Sand Point Road. Hillside footing can be icy; neither shoreline ice nor lake ice is a travel route.

See Tahquamenon's winter waterfall

Upper Falls winter overlooks

The Upper Falls remains a major state park destination in winter; the composition changes with freeze and thaw.

The moveCheck the DNR state park's current trail and road notices, then use only an official maintained overlook.

Before you go: A photograph of frozen water never establishes a stable river edge or safe approach to cliffs.

See the winter Lake Superior shoreline

Land-based ice-sculpted driftwood

The moveWalk on approved dry ground and view changing ice patterns from the beach; binoculars may show Grand Island ice curtains.

Before you go: Check lake wind and winter road conditions. Never walk or drive onto the lake ice.

Learn ice fishing before choosing a lake

Ice-safety-first angling planning

The Michigan DNR publishes winter fishing techniques, regulations, safety information and candidate fishing waters.

The moveRead current fishing regulations; consult local authorities and direct on-site ice assessments. If there's any uncertainty, stay ashore.

Before you go: Historical fishing shanties do not prove current safe ice. The marker represents the Denton Township public access area; current parking and ice safety are NOT verified.

Watch winter eagles over open water

Binoculars and dated sightings

Winter eagle-watching can be rewarding around open-water habitats; weather suitability alone cannot establish actual sightings.

The moveChoose a legal publicly managed shore viewpoint; compare a dated eagle report with present weather and light.

Before you go: Never approach perches or roost trees and never claim today's birds from yesterday's forecast.

Follow winter birds on the Detroit River

Birding along an open-water corridor

Michigan DNR identifies the Detroit River corridor as an important Great Lakes birding area, with waterfowl and raptor migration.

The moveBring binoculars and check the current Detroit birding report for dated sightings and public park access.

Before you go: Open water is a bird habitat signal, not proof a species is present or a park is open at a particular hour.

Try winter stargazing at Headlands

Clouds and moonlight matter

Headlands is an established Dark Sky Park in Emmet County. A clear night and the right celestial conditions determine the view.

The moveCompare the aurora forecast, cloud cover and moonlight; confirm the park's nighttime entry and parking instructions.

Before you go: The marker identifies the park area, not a verified nighttime parking stall. Do not photograph from lake ice.

Walk a snowy northern Michigan river forest

Winter hiking rather than deep-snow travel

The Au Sable forest and trail landscape offers winter nature study where trails and parking are officially accessible.

The moveSelect a public route with confirmed winter parking, then check snow depth and ice traction needs.

Before you go: A regional river-view marker is not a trailhead. Riverbank ice and stream ice are unsafe shortcuts.

Photograph the wild Lake Superior coast

Big-water landscape and winter light

Presque Isle's shoreline is a recognizable Marquette landscape; winter photography depends on public viewpoints and the day's conditions.

The moveChoose officially open road and park access, bring a windproof layer, and observe the shore from well back.

Before you go: Do not approach storm-splashed rocks, shoreline ice shelves or closed overlooks.

Ride horseback at Silver Lake's shoreline

November shoreline horseback window

The Michigan DNR separately designates a shoreline horseback riding season at Silver Lake State Park, November 1–30.

The moveRead the state park's current horse-access rules and locate its designated entry before transporting a horse.

Before you go: This is a short seasonal activity, not a December–February offer. Weather and shore access must still be confirmed.

Field judgment matters

The landscape invites. The conditions decide.

Snow depth is not grooming. A dated sighting is not a wildlife guarantee. Lake ice coverage is never proof of safe ice. Check park restrictions, winter roads, trail uses, real-time warnings and the most recent operator report before traveling.

Michigan's winter conditions vary sharply between the Upper Peninsula, lake-effect snowbelts and southern Lower Peninsula. All 18 examples are inspiration and planning research, not current access or operating status.
